What is The Witcher?
The Witcher is a sprawling, multimedia, epic dark fantasy series. It first came to life as a short story written by Andrzej Spakowski in 1986, and was then expanded to a novel series. All told, the series spans 9 complete novels and many more, smaller stories. Eventually, the series was adapted to comic books, video games, movies, and TV series, making it a staple entry in the dark fantasy canon.
What is The Witcher about?
The Witcher as a series mainly follows Geralt of Rivia, a witcher—a skilled and somewhat altered monster slayer hired by anyone with enough coin to afford one. Geralt wakes one day with amnesia and must navigate a complex world of humans, elves, dwarves, and numerous shadowy and grotesque beasts, surviving both monsters and politics alike, often at the same time and in the same breath. The series weaves folktales from many different cultures, but draws largely on Slavic and Polish legends.
Who are the main characters of The Witcher?
- Geralt of Rivia: An amnesiac witcher caught in a web of conspiracy, politics, and cults.
- Cirilla Fiona Elen Riannon: A princess and Geralt’s adopted daughter as well as a witcher.
- Yennefer of Vengerberg: A skilled sorceress and a mother figure to Ciri, as well as a romantic interest to Geralt.
- Dandelion (Jaskier): A poet, musician, and friend to Geralt who often joins him on his adventures.
- Triss Merigold: Another sorceress, mother figure of Ciri, and romantic interest.
- Emhyr var Emreis: A usurped king intent on regaining power.
