Got a ton of old gear sitting in your garage looking for a new home? You can host a garage sale! You'll just need a valid Facebook account and a computer to begin drawing in a crowd. You can advertise a garage sale by creating an event, a status, or by using Facebook's marketplace. This wikiHow will show you how to advertise and promote a garage sale using Facebook on your Windows or Mac computer.

Posting Yard Sale Ads on Facebook

  • Create an Event for your garage sale. Include the location, date, and time, along with pictures of your items.[1]
  • Use your status to advertise. Enter a location, date, time, and tag friends to help promote your sale.
  • Create a new "Item for Sale" listing on Facebook Marketplace. Use "Garage sale" as the title and include photos of your items.

  1. Log into your Facebook account. If needed, you can reset it.
  2. This will be listed on the left side of the screen.[2]

  3. Click the top of the page to upload a photo. Be sure to upload a photo of your garage or lawn with most of your items in view; this will be the image people see.[3]
  4. Use a name such as Garage sale, Yard sale, or Moving sale.
  5. Click the field for each and select a date and time for your garage sale.
  6. Click the Is it in person or virtual field and select In person.
    • Click Who can see it? and select Public to ensure your event reaches as many people as possible.
    • Click What are the details? field and enter additional details that can help potential buyers, such as location help, active hours, unique/rare items, etc.

  8. You can share this event with friends, via messenger, or publish it as a post.
    • If you have other social media accounts, consider posting your event link on those platforms for more views.
    • Ask friends and family to pass along your event.
    • You can pay for traditional advertising by clicking Promote Event at the top. This will allow you to pay for time to promote the visibility of your garage sale across Facebook.

  3. Include Garage Sale at the top of your post along with your address, date, and time of the event.
    • Below that, enter additional details that can help potential buyers, such as location help, active hours, unique/rare items, etc.
  4. Click the Photo/video icon to upload. Be sure to upload a photo of your garage or lawn with most of your items in view; this will be the image people see.
  5. Click Only me and select Public to ensure your event reaches as many people as possible.

Using Facebook Marketplace

  1. Log into your Facebook account. If you don't have an account, you can create one.
    • Keep in mind that Facebook may take down listings that advertise yard sales rather than individual items.
  2. It's located on the left side of the page. You can also click the shop icon at the top of the page.[7]
  3. You can find this on the left side of the page.[8]
  4. Since Facebook Marketplace no longer has a Garage Sale category, you'll need to advertise your garage sale using the regular item listing.
  5. Take a good photo of your garage or lawn with most of your items in view; this will be the first image people see. You'll have a total of 10 slots to showcase your items for sale.[9]
    • If you have a lot of items spread around, you can also take a video. Click Add Video to upload the video.
  6. You can be as descriptive as you want.[10]
    • Title: Use a title such as Garage sale, Yard sale, or Moving sale.
      • Optional: Put your address in the title along with the date (x/x/2023 or TODAY)
    • Price: Enter an amount close to the average price of your items. You can also simply put $1 or $0.
    • Category: Select a category that matches the majority of your items, or Miscellaneous.
    • More Details: Enter your address and date/time of the sale first. Then, enter any details that can help potential buyers, such as location help, active hours, unique/rare items, etc.
      • If you don't see this field, click More Details.
  7. This will be at the bottom of the left panel.[11]
    • You'll need to finalize your listing.
  8. This will ensure that people know you won't be shipping any items out.
  9. Your Facebook Marketplace listing will be published.[12]
    • Be sure to keep an eye on your messages in case any potential buyers want to contact you beforehand.
